A Fine American Colonial Revival
A Fine American Colonial Revival Pine and Mixed Woods Windsor Armchair early 20th c. bearing label of Wallace Nutting (Massachusetts 1861-1941) model #409 tall bow back with squared terminals in a flat small armrest shaped elliptical seat bulb-turned and tapering legs with a stretcher original surface. Note: The c. 1770 prototype for this chair is illustrated as #2643 in Volume Two of Wallace Nutting's seminal Furniture Treasury. The author describes the form as "beautifully turned including the front spindle well shaped bow; necking to small dimensions and enlarging like a mortise..." features echoed in the chair seen here. The extraordinarily high back on this chair relates to that on a "Spinster's chair" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art documented by Nutting as #2698.
