The Excellent Old Ballad of Chevy
The Excellent Old Ballad of Chevy Chace Broadside Describing the Battle of Otterburn English broadside ca 17th century. Folio approx. 9.5 x 14.25 in. The ballad is recorded in the Stationer's Register (London) an early claim to the rights of printing similar to later copyrights in 1624 although it certainly predates that as folk lore. Subtitled: Describing the woeful Hunting Match on Cheviot Hills with the bloody fight between the Earls Percy and Douglas. While some trace the ballad to the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 others think it describes the Battle of Piperden (Pepperden) between Henry Percy of Northumberland and William Douglas Earl of Angus a more private border feud (i.e. not a national war) fought in 1435 or 1436. It is thought to be a variant of The Hunting of Cheviot which was old in the mid-sixteenth century. There are apparently many ballads that used the same tune although that is not reproduced on this early broadside. ''Back in the day'' everyone knew all the ballad tunes but musical notations as we understand them today did not exist. Notations did exist of course in churches and a few other contexts. European notation was not standarized until about the end of the 17th century and then not read by very many. Condition: Toned old fold with small hole affecting only one letter. Edges somewhat scuffed with bits of paper loss (esp. lower left) not affecting text.

"FIGHTING RED CLOUD'S WARRIORS" 1ST
"FIGHTING RED CLOUD'S WARRIORS" 1ST EDITION 1926Presented in this lot is the First Edition of "Fighting Red Cloud's Warriors" by E. A. Brininstool, 1926, The Hunter-Trader-Trapper Co., Columbus, Ohio. A classic account of The Fetterman Massacre, The Wagon Box Fight, The Battle of Beecher Island, and The Buffalo Wallow Fight. From the Preface, "I am not a believer in the old adage that 'the only good Indian is a dead Indian.' My sympathy is with the red man. The early white traders who trafficked with the Indian were, as a rule, a class of men of little conscience and few scruples, who would stoop to any deceit or trickery to rob the Indian of his furs and pelts. It was the early trader who introduced whiskey among the Indian tribes; who, through fraud and knavery, turned the red man against the whites of whatever class. This was the beginning of the hatred and contempt which made all white men, good or bad, soon look alike to the warring savage." Brininstool (1870-1957) was a cowboy poet, but was not a working cowboy. He lived most his life in Los Angeles, rubbed elbows with Will Rogers and Charles Russell, who met regularly as part of a western artists group at the University Club in LA. He is best known for Trail Dust of a Maverick (1914) and Bozeman Trail (1922). Brininstool was a prolific author on the subject of Indian Wars, especially on Little Big Horn. This red cloth illustrated hardcover is in good overall condition, slight scuffing and soiling observed on cover and edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and very slight foxing, no other obvious marring noted. Measures 5.25"W x 7.25"L , weight approximate 10oz.

WAR OF 1812 NY STATESMAN
WAR OF 1812 NY STATESMAN NEWSPAPERThursday morning, June 17, 1813, No. 258, Vol 1. Multiple columns describe the official British account of the battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Java. A harrowing description of the battle leading up to the "capture and ultimate destruction" of the Java. The surrender is described by First Lieutenant Ducie Chads "..having a great part of our crew killed and wounded, our bowsprit and three masts gone, several guns useless, we should not be justified in wasting the lives of more of those remaining." This historical newspaper provides a contemporary look at what battle with Old Ironsides entailed. Just a few columns away from this account we see a notice for a meeting for the General Committee of Arrangements regarding "celebrating the 37th anniversary of the American Independence". Showing how the struggles of freedom impacted parts of the population is a notice directly below this advertising "A Mulatto wench 25 years old" for sale. There are many other notices and advertisements of interest including a police report regarding stolen silver, a notice for the sale of items made at the state prison, advertising for the Bank of America, and medicines including mercury administered by Dr. Hive. Approx. 13-1/4" L x 20-1/2" H. Wear commensurate with age, use, and materials. Weakness at folds, uneven edges. See images for detail. This item can be shipped in-house.
