THREE PALE GREY-GLAZED STONEWARE ITEMS Including a fluted teapot with fixed braided handle -- h: 11 in. a flattened ovoid vase covered in a pale grey glaze with areas of ochre and deeper grey impressed mark near base -- h: 6.5 in. a flattened footed cup with impressed circular motifs to each side and yellow band at lip impressed square mark near foot -- h: 5.25 in. a baluster vase covered in a similar glaze with incised X-mark on side seal mark near foot -- h: 7 in. and a square footed dish with upcurved corners with central diamond motif to center accented in black and brown impressed Japanese character seal to underside --- w: 9.5 in. CHINESE PAINTED GRAY POTTERY BOX
CHINESE PAINTED GRAY POTTERY BOX AND COVER The bowl and cover painted in salmon pink and pale greenish white with bands of sweeping interlaced scrolls set between decorative salmon-pink borders the bowl raised on a shallow foot ring and the cover with a shallow rim encircling a central whorl motif some rubbing of pigment (shallow rim chips); 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. Compare a painted pottery bowl and cover illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu vol. 8 Tokyo 1955 no. 10. The shape and decoration of this lot closely follow contemporary lacquer pieces. See the bowl and cover excavated from the tomb in Hubei in 1976 and currently in the Hubei Provincial Museum illustrated by Wang Shixiang Chinese Ancient Lacquer Beijing 1987 no. 12. PROVENANCE: Christie's New York September 21 1995 lot 17. The Hardy Collection of Early Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art from the Sze Yuan Tang.
